Kellen Tasaka

Test Prep Tutor

I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Growing up, my parents always instilled in me the value of trying my best. They taught me to believe that if I worked hard enough, I could accomplish anything. With that mindset, I was able to run varsity cross country and track for four years while also challenging myself academically. I also earned the highest academic scholarship from my local university.

I believe my success was largely thanks to the lessons my parents taught me, which is why as a tutor I want to impart to my students the idea that the effort, not the result, is what matters most. Even if I did not win the race or ace every test, so long as I tried my best, I could still be proud of my improvement and hard work. That mindset of striving for self-improvement over absolute perfection is the mantra of my tutoring.

My tutoring journey began during college when I took a part-time job as a test prep tutor. I was inspired to teach the SAT because I had been tutored by a former writer of the SAT and found the lessons to be enormously helpful. From that tutor I learned that the makers of the SAT are quite formulaic in their approach to making the test, and being able to exploit that formula helped me to improve substantially. Being able to help my students improve in a similar fashion and gain confidence in their ability to break down the test made it one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. This ignited a newfound passion in me to teach, which led me to also take up a remote job teaching English as a Second Language to people in Japan.

Teaching the SAT and ACT with AJ Tutoring, I continue to enjoy helping my students navigate the testing process and learn to approach the tests confidently and systematically.
