Kolo Wamba

Academic Tutor

Throughout college and graduate school, I worked with students of all backgrounds and learning styles as a tutor for math and physics. I soon realized how much I enjoyed working with students: helping a student break through a tough concept or grasp a complex idea is immeasurably rewarding and gives me new insight in to the material.

I was born in Boston, MA, but I spent a good chunk of my childhood overseas in Tanzania, East Africa. I received a BS degree in applied physics from Columbia University and MS and PhD degrees, also in applied physics, from Stanford University.

I have taught various math, science, and engineering subjects as a faculty member at DeVry University, Gavilan College, and Skyline College. In addition to being an educator, I have held research and development positions at various technology companies around California. Most recently, I’ve been a consultant for a startup that is developing a special X-ray microscope for photographing tiny defects in computer chips.

One thing you will notice about me right away is that I love science, especially physics. I love learning everything about it: its tools, its methods, its history—everything! My favorite part of tutoring is using my enthusiasm to infect the students I work with and spark their own interest in the material.

When it comes to teaching, I’m a big believer in “learning by doing.” The key to being a good math and science student is to practice, practice, and practice again. At the same time, I feel very strongly that practice should not be unpleasant or stressful. As with physical exercise, when it starts to hurt, that’s your signal that it’s time for a break, and hopefully it never gets to this point! Because of this, you can always count on me to maintain a laid back attitude and create a comfortable learning environment.

When I’m not obsessing over my latest pet science project, I enjoy my amazing children and play the bass fiddle.
