I have been enthralled with literature and history for nearly all my life. My parents were children of the 1950s, replete with stories of ration books in post-war Britain and Civil Rights demonstrations at UC Berkeley. I used to spend my summers in Bristol and elsewhere around the UK, visiting my dad’s family, touring Roman ruins and later historical landmarks, and reading Horrible Histories. My passion flowered into a history degree from Santa Clara University, where I also double-majored in Latin and Greek language and literature.
After graduation, I had not yet had enough of classes, discussions, and extensive reading assignments. I went on to earn my master’s degree in Medieval Studies at the University of Oxford. I particularly enjoyed helping friends and classmates formulate essays and better make connections between historical events.
Since completing my degree, I have been tutoring students academically and helping them improve competence and confidence in humanities classes. At AJ, I specialize in supporting students in their skill-building for reading and writing in history and English. I enjoy helping students attain “A-ha!” moments where a certain concept or technique suddenly makes sense. My students benefit from my passion for English and history and my prowess for explaining complex ideas in a simple way.
In my spare time, I love to read fantasies and histories, puzzle over cryptic crosswords, work out at the barre, spin, bake copiously, spend hours on Pinterest looking for recipes, learn new languages, and annoy four enormous housecats.
