Stephanie Vu

Palo Alto Office Director, Test Prep & Academic Tutor

I was born and raised in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating high school, I attended the University of California, Irvine, where I obtained my B.S. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Management.

During my high school and undergraduate careers, I volunteered with various organizations to tutor kids of all ages. I learned that being a successful student was not always a piece of cake and that some students need more help in certain subjects than others. It was not until after I graduated that I began professionally tutoring 1-on-1. After working with numerous students, I have come to realize how large an impact a tutor can have. Not only can a tutor help a student master a certain subject, a tutor can be a student’s role model and confidant, giving them advice about the challenges they face navigating their academic careers.

When it comes to tutoring, I believe that a customized approach is most important. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses, and it is imperative to determine what a student’s needs are. It is also crucial to identify short and long-term goals for both the student and parents alike, as well as develop a realistic plan to reach those goals.

One of my favorite subjects to teach is math. A math problem may have only one correct answer, but there can be numerous ways to solve the problem. I enjoy working with students to determine what is the easiest way for them to reach that correct answer. I’ve found that teaching the process is also essential to test prep: students can employ different strategies in addition to their grasp of content knowledge to succeed on the SAT and ACT. It’s my goal to help them identify the best approaches for them.

Strong communication skills and patience are extremely important attributes for a successful tutor. Even if there is only one correct answer, the problem can be explained in as many different ways as it takes for the student to understand it. Throughout my own schooling, I learned many important life skills, such as planning, organization, and time management skills, and I also work to incorporate these into my work with students to help them succeed.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy traveling to new places and exploring different cultures and cuisines, as well as taking photos and capturing those moments. I also love spending time cooking for my friends and family. Spinach and artichoke dip is my go-to appetizer to bring to any gathering!
