With most of our students already back in the full swing of the school year, their just for fun books are most likely getting placed back on the shelf. Reading is not something that should be saved for school breaks. It continuously helps improve students’ vocabulary and comprehension skills. To keep reading fun, we polled our staff for some fun and out of the box suggestions for students to continue to build their reading skills as well as a love for reading!
Lee Miller suggested Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud.
“This is a must-read for anyone who loves the medium of comics/graphic novels, or who needs a bit of convincing. It’s also a great intro to the kind of analytical thinking in the humanities that students will do in college, but presented in a way that’s accessible to teenagers and intellectually precocious kids (I loved it in middle school, and I was a nerd, but not a genius).”
Holly Hong suggested Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle + its sequels.
“It’s a really good gateway for students who perhaps prefer movies/cartoons (as many will have seen the Ghibli version) to read something a little more on the whimsical side.”
Peggy Anderson suggested Wolves of Willoughby Chase, The Golden Compass, and Artemis Fowl
“These books are unforgettable! Easy to read and easy to get completely sucked into! These stories build such fantastical worlds and characters that students get lost in the fantasy of it all.”
I am going to suggest the Eragon series!
“Written by a homeschooled student as his senior project, the sheer success of this series can show students the importance of reading and writing. The trials and tribulations of the characters lend to their development and the high fantasy aspect make this coming of age narrative highly addictive!”
