Learn to write creative, cohesive rhymes like your favorite emcees! Rap appears in movies, on TV, and even in classrooms —teachers often include creative options for class projects and presentations, including writing rap/hip hop songs about topics on upcoming exams! Try your hand at writing your own original lyrics with guidance and feedback

Course Description:

This course covers songwriting basics such as structure (including narrative and experimental structures), rhythm/meter/cadence, and the writing process, as well as more advanced/hip hop-specific topics like creative vocabulary, rhyme (including slant/B rhymes, internal vs external rhymes, etc.), figurative language, and working with/without a beat. Students will learn to use few words to speak volumes and will engage in a variety of rhyming and freewriting exercises in addition to drafting and developing polished songs/verses. Students will also gain exposure to the history and purpose of hip hop lyrics as well as inspiration for their own writing.
