Course Description:

Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man explores the social and intellectual issues facing African Americans early in the twentieth century.

It’s also a challenging text to read, with its unusual narrative structure and complex prose, and it’s often required reading at Bay Area high schools and many universities. This class will help you understand the life and influences of Ellison, his writing style and technique, as well as the themes and tone of the novel. Students can also look forward to exploring Ellison’s Harlem with related discussions on the Harlem Renaissance and Jazz.

We’ll identify literary techniques and study themes so that you can be ready to discuss this novel next time you’re assigned this or a similar text in school. We’ll also write 2-3 essays over the course of the summer that will help you prepare for the type of writing assignments you can expect from your next English teacher.

Students enrolled in the following classes traditionally read Invisible Man: Menlo- Atherton: AP Lit; Aragon: Senior AP; Cupertino: AP English Lit.
