Introduction to Marine Biology

The world beneath the waves is amazing and wonderful. Strange creatures occupy the depths that are both familiar and truly bizarre. Come explore these amazing organisms and learn how they are uniquely adapted to this fantastic place!

  • Reinforce important concepts taught in AP Biology and AP Environmental Science

Course Description:

In this course, students will work with a professional marine ecologist to explore their topics of interest in marine biology.

Sample topics include:

  • Sharks! Delve into the unique evolutionary history that makes this particular group of fishes so incredibly successful over their 450 million year existence.
  • Deep sea fishes! What we know and don’t know about these bizarre organisms rarely glimpsed alive in their dark, high-pressure habitat.
  • Tide pools! Do you enjoy hiking along the coast and peering into the tiny pools left behind on the rocks? Examine live specimens and discuss the unique adaptations found in the organisms of the intertidal.

Students will work with their instructor to develop a focus of interest and finish the course with a new understanding of the world beneath the sea.
